I had long been a fan of this woman’s work. As a journalist, she exuded class, superb reporting, and an uncanny ability to make her audience feel as though she were reporting a story specifically for them With Cheryl Wills, you felt, the story was personal to her and her delivery was done with precision and detail. She asked the questions that you wanted to ask and got the answers that you needed to hear. Indeed, Cheryl Wills was, for me, the very definition of journalism and I silently applauded her accomplishments.

I felt that her successes paved the way for all journalists, particularly those of color like myself. Needless to say, I was elated when her business representative Emanuel Robinson responded to my request to interview Cheryl and suggested that the interview be done on the set of her acclaimed news segment on Spectrum News’ New York 1, “In Focus With Cheryl Wills”. Interviewing Cheryl was quite the experience, to say the least. Usually on the other side of the interviewer’s table, Ms. Wills was eloquent, informative, and passionate as she talked about her latest book “Emancipated: My Family’s Fight For Freedom”. The book is a gem as it chronicles Cheryl’s family’s journey and their role in the larger story that is the African American experience.
