Celebrating Independence: New Castle Commemorates 248th Anniversary of Separation Day

On June 7th, History New Castle kicked off its vibrant two-day celebration of Separation Day, marking the 248th anniversary of Delaware's historic separation from Pennsylvania. This annual event, deeply rooted in the town's heritage, honors the momentous day on June 15, 1776, when the Delaware Assembly declared independence from both Pennsylvania and British rule, setting the stage for broader American independence.

Held in the picturesque Battery Park, this year's celebration offered a wide array of activities and attractions that drew residents and visitors alike. The festivities featured live music, games, kids' rides, various exhibitors, and a delightful selection of food and drink. A highlight for many was the beer garden, where attendees enjoyed craft beer, wine, and seltzers. Remarkably, all of this was offered with free admission, making it an accessible and inclusive event for the community.

The first day of the celebration was filled with live music, including captivating performances by Blue Cat Blues. Food trucks and vendors offered an assortment of delicious non-alcoholic beverages and snacks, creating a lively and family-friendly atmosphere.

The excitement continued into the second day with a grand parade along Delaware Street. This procession featured a mix of local dignitaries and political candidates, including Dr. Mike Katz (Independent for U.S. Senate), Eric Hansen (for U.S. Senate), Marcus Henry (for County Executive), and Monique Johns (New Castle County Council President). The parade also saw current and former pageant title holders like Kaylynn Pride (Miss Wilmington 2024), Sophia Hughes (Miss Delaware Teen 2023), and Danielle Rodriguez (Mrs. Delaware American 2024) engaging warmly with the crowd. Local organizations such as The Wilmington Manor Lions Club, a local chapter of Lions Clubs International, an international service organization dedicated to addressing various humanitarian needs, promoting peace, and improving communities worldwide, also took part in the parade. The Wilmington Manor Lions Club, like other Lions Clubs, is committed to serving its local community in and around Wilmington Manor, Delaware, through various service projects and initiatives such as disaster relief, support for the elderly and disabled, health initiatives, community service projects and more.

After the parade, a large segment of the crowd made their way to Battery Park to immerse themselves in a variety of engaging activities designed for all ages. Families with children and pets eagerly participated in an array of thrilling options, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy.

For the adventurous, the rock-climbing wall provided an exhilarating challenge, allowing climbers of all skill levels to test their abilities and conquer their fears. The trampolines were a hit with the young, offering the chance to leap into the air and perform gravity-defying tricks. Meanwhile, the zip lining experience delivered a rush of adrenaline for participants.

In addition to these high-energy activities, the event featured a more relaxed and heartwarming attraction: the petting area hosted by the Brandywine Valley SPCA. Here, attendees had the opportunity to interact with friendly, adoptable dogs. This not only provided a delightful experience for animal lovers but also helped raise awareness about pet adoption and the important work of the SPCA.

Families enjoyed the sunny day with picnics on the park’s lush green lawns, indulging in delicious treats from various food vendors such as Dino’s (Homemade Italian Ice and Ice Cream), Dixie’s Down Home Cooking, and Kry's Soul Kreation.
